External / Social:

Want to fire up the temperature, and your metabolism, this Winter? Well, there is so much more to our extra hot chilli powder than meets the...spice tolerance. Yes, our fiery little spice bombs are of superior quality ground in the UK from whole chillies, but – before you get all hot under the collar – let us explain why you ought to start feeling the heat! You can blame it all on Capsaicin, the culprit – sorry, compound – held responsible for setting your mouth on fire; but what if we told you the red-hot rascal temporarily raises your body temperature in doing so which may help you burn calories and fat! What’s more, some research suggests its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial perks can boost immunity, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and even relieve pain! Glow up with vitamin C and other antioxidants found in chilli powder which may reduce the risk of chronic diseases. And, if that’s not enough to put fire in your belly, you’d do well to note that Capsaicin can trigger endorphin release reducing stress levels and making you feel happy! No way?! Burn, baby, burn!

Ground Turmeric

External / Social:

Think you know turmeric? Think again! We all know this sunny little root is good for our guts, it’s anti-inflammatory, it’s jam-packed with antioxidants, it can soothe arthritis, boost immunity, and even bat away the blues, but is the odd shot of the gorgeous gold stuff when we’ve lost a little shine really going to do the trick? Well, you’re not wrong, turmeric indeed contains an outrageously active antioxidant called curcumin which really is the star of the show! It’s the reason it’s yellow for starters…not to mention its wonderfully warming wellness perks. But, as with most things in life, the key you might be missing is consistency! Rome wasn’t built in a day; it was, rather, a daily commitment. Get some goss from your GP on your recommended daily dose, especially if you’re diabetic or on blood-thinners, otherwise spice things up slowly, stick to the suggested amounts and - want more good news? Consuming turmeric with a fat source like avocadoes, nut butter, and olive oil aids its absorption! Just another reason to yearn for the yellow spice! Top marks for turmeric!

Internal / Staff:

Turmeric is a yellow/gold spice that comes from the turmeric plant. It’s renowned for supporting gut health, boosting immunity and helping fight depression. Historically, it’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine, mainly in South Asia, for many conditions, including rheumatism, fatigue, pain and breathing problems. The key active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is believed to have various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research suggests the soothing effects of curcumin soothe arthritis and may even help reverse some of the phases of heart disease, such as atherosclerosis and atrial arrhythmias. Curcumin also improves the function of the endothelium, which works by helping to regulate blood pressure and blood clotting, among many other things. The key with reaping the benefits of turmeric is consistency. The recommended dose of turmeric is between 2.5 to 5g a day, but if you take drugs like blood thinners or diabetes medicine, ask your doctor before using turmeric as a treatment as it can interact with other medicines. Consuming turmeric with a fat source like avocadoes, nut butter, and olive oil aids its absorption.

Red Split Lentils

External / Social:

Before you act on im-pulse and accuse us of making your belly bloat, we’d love it if you lent us your ear so we can demonstrate our exceptional nutritional quote. People think we’re just for veggies; it is true our plant-based protein is second to none – but we even complement meat dishes so we can be enjoyed by everyone! People seem to think that in healthiness we lack, but we’re rich in fibre, iron, potassium, and B vitamins, plus we can help keep your blood sugar levels on track. You may think we give you the belly ache, but it’s possible your belief is a minor mistake; we support your gut and compared to most we’re softer and easier to digest – I promise I’m not trying to make this into a lentil contest. My vibrant red colour is deliberate you see, so you can tell the difference between brown, green and me. I cook much faster and break down into something quite mushy, so for soups, curries, salads, fillings, casseroles and dal, my textures pretty cushy. Finally, for the myth I’m high maintenance and take ages to prepare, kindly note that I don’t even need soaking…just so you’re aware!

Internal / Staff:

East End Red Split Lentils are superior in quality to Natco. They’re a versatile, nutrient-rich source of high-quality plant-based protein that can be used for endless dishes, including ones containing meat. They’re rich in fibre, iron, potassium and B Vitamins, they support gut health and can also help regulate blood sugar levels. They are low in sodium and saturated fat. Red lentils are generally easier to digest compared to other types of lentils because they have a softer texture and cook down more thoroughly. Soaking or rinsing lentils before cooking may also help alleviate some of these digestion issues. They can be used in soups, curries, salads, fillings, casseroles and dal; they can also be blended into a paste for fillings or used to create lentil flour for gluten-free recipes. They are quick and easy to prepare, and they don’t require soaking like some other legumes.

Ghee

External / Social:

Ghee! I can believe it’s not butter!

So, you’ve been avoiding ghee because it’s calorific, but have you got your facts right?

You’re not wrong: at around 120-130 calories per tbsp, Ghee is a high-fat food and – of course – if you overindulge, you may well pile on the pounds. However, just like the much-loved avocado, when eaten in moderation, this little lactose-free nutty delight can play a big role in a balanced diet. You’re right: ghee contains mostly saturated fats. But what you may not know is it also contains short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which has been linked to reducing inflammation, balancing blood sugar, regulating metabolism, supporting heart and gut health and some early studies even suggest – wait for it – reducing fat storage and calorie intake! Gee ghee! What is certain is that it has a higher smoke point than butter, making it much more suitable for cooking at high temperatures without breaking down into harmful compounds. Ultimately, ghee’s not "fattening” as such but, because it is calorie-dense, a little must go a long way. When used in moderation, ghee can deliver its deliciously rich, notoriously nutty flavour alongside real health benefits, without the calorie price tag.

Ultimately, ghee’s not "fattening” as such but, because it is calorie-dense, a little must go a long way. When used in moderation and as part of a balanced diet - that includes a variety of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains – it is less likely to lead to weight gain than when consumed in excess with processed or unhealthy foods.
